When buying that new home, or even for current homeowners, it is imperative you have your chimney flue cleaned and inspected by a qualified contractor. Home inspectors cannot inspect the flue liner between the damper and the crown as they do not carry the proper equipment, nor are they properly trained. The Chimney Safety Institute of America states that chimney fires often burn very slowly and are difficult to detect. This makes it especially important to have fireplaces, chimneys, and flues cleaned and inspected on a regular basis, at least once a year. If fireplaces are burned every day, it is recommended to have them cleaned twice a year. The hot by-products from burning wood and gas in a fireplace cool off in a cold chimney, condense into a liquid and adhere to the flue liners.

The Environmental Protection Agency reported that as long ago as 2011, there were over 53,000 fires from heating equipment causing over $893 million in property damage with a home fire reported every 85 seconds. The leading cause of these fires was the failure to clean and inspect fireplaces and flues. Not only is fire a major cause for concern, but so is the carbon monoxide that is created from incomplete combustion of wood and gas.

We can all become impatient when we want to build that fire, but the International Association of Firefighters reminds us to avoid burning unseasoned wood. Unseasoned wood creates more creosote (the by-product of burning wood) that will build up on the flue liner and raise the potential for a chimney fire.
